I visited a small town on the Rhine river called St. Goar as well as the Bavarian capital of Munich in 2003.  I ate a bratwurst at an old beer hall in Munich where in the back room you could look very carefully at the ceiling and still see where a Nazi era swastika had been painted over.

I returned to Germany to visit the capital city of Berlin in the winter of 2004 after my study abroad in London.  Berlin is the seat of government and a very multicultural city similar to New York.  The Holocaust Museum opened while I was there. There is a real effort by almost all Germans to remember the pains of the past to make sure they are not repeated in the future.
